What is the Trailblazer Program?
It is a unique approach to training high school students about post-secondary educational opportunities. The program includes a comprehensive three-day training workshop, presented on a college campus by financial aid professionals, for the purpose of educating selected high school students, Trailblazers, about the college admissions process and about how to obtain financial assistance for postsecondary education. This program is also an opportunity to meet and make new friends with other student leaders from all over the state.
What does a Trailblazer do?
Upon return to their high school campus and under the supervision of the schools counselor, the Trailblazers are expected to use every opportunity to share their knowledge of financial aid procedures with their peers. Requests for application materials and questions submitted by Trailblazers are given the highest priority by LOSFA. To maximize the effectiveness of the program, the high school guidance counselor and principal create opportunities throughout the school year for the Trailblazer to meet with other students who plan to pursue postsecondary education.
How do I become a Trailblazer?
To participate, a high school must nominate a qualified junior who is enthusiastic about the opportunity of being a Trailblazer. To be considered, students must be college bound, academically outstanding, effective public speakers and leaders among their peers. The success of the program depends solely upon the students' initiative in disseminating the information they have learned.
